On Offsets: I recently found a website, ecofabulous, offering the best discussion of the pros, cons, and how-tos of carbon offsets I’ve seen. Check out the posts on “Ten Facts About Greenhouse Gas Offsets” and “Six Questions to Ask Carbon Offset Organizations.” Interestingly, blogger Zem Joaquin (she’s female) is a design maven.
On Pennsylvania Environmental Law: the Clean Vehicles Act — which sets stronger air pollution laws for cars and light trucks sold in the state — has been passed into law, as has one to reduce mercury pollution from the state’s coal-fired power plants 90 percent by 2015. But now, the Rendell Administration has approved a permit for dumping out-of-state toxic waste (river sludge) into a certain pit. Opponents fear it’s “part of the Rendell Administration’s attempt to set up a new industry in Pennsylvania — out-of-state toxic waste dumping.” I’ll have to research this a bit more, but if true it confirms my sense that sometimes Harrisburg giveth us a clean environment with one hand and taketh it away with the other. (See my November 20, 2006 post, “Environmental Contradictions.”)
On Eco Media: I’ve posted a review of the new HGTV program “Living with Ed” at the WIMN’s Voices blog. Check it out!
