More than 40 people filled the room at the Houston Community Center for a discussion led by the Clean Air Council about air pollution problems in that part of the city. The discussion quickly expanded to the general question of environmental quality and the deterioration of community values which leads people to trash and disrespect their own neighborhoods. The highlight of the evening was the extensive comments from members of a youth group in the neighborhood that is supported by the center. Their energy, clear thinking and commitment animated the meeting. Key issues that emerged were, in addition to how to clean up the streets and empty lots, the need to improve SEPTA service, both in frequency and cleanliness, and the need for long range planning.
