Yesterday was a big day for recycling in Philly.
Nutter announced his first budget yesterday and included was an additional $6.5 million for recycling with the goal to get single-stream city-wide by next january. if he succeeds he will do in a year what street refused to do in 8.

Over the past 18 months RecycleNOW Philadelphia has been hard at work collecting over 12,000 signatures, lobbying for public hearings, and making sure our next mayor will implement a dependable weekly curbside recycling program for everyone in the city. Now we need your help…

RecycleNOW reports that over 10,000 in Philly have signed their petition supporting incentive-based single stream recycling in the city. See the breakdown by neighborhood here.

Saw this short article in the Inquirer yesterday. Apparently they were shooting for a 25-30% increase and got 29%. Not too bad. I’m glad they’ve finally discovered that making recycling easier means more people will do it. Full article below.

Urban Green Partnership is part of the city-wide fight to improve recycling in Philadelphia.
They are working to get 5 to 10 thousand signatures from South Philadelphia for the Recycle Now campaign.
Meet up with them tomorrow to start to get people activly involved with tabling and
petitioning in and around south philly.

So the city has started to offer bi-weekly single stream recycling today in the northeast section of the city.
They are able to do so b/c of the Blue Mountain Facility which Lauren and some others recently got a tour of (sadly I had work that eve).
